Cornbread is a general term that refers to any ‘quick’ bread that uses cornmeal. It is commonly associated with Native American cuisine, but has gained widespread popularity thanks to its easy and versatile nature, coupled with its great taste.
Cornmeal is a meal – meaning a coarse type of flour – that is ground using dried maize. You can actually get it in four different varieties, those being blue cornmeal, steel ground yellow cornmeal, stone-ground cornmeal, and white cornmeal.
Cornbread is often a light and rich tasting bread – almost cakey – that can be used in a variety of different ways in order to make fluffy desserts and savory dishes. The versatile nature and quick preparation time makes this a great fall-back for anyone who enjoys baking their own bread, or impressing guests with home-cooked meals.
Typically, this bread will be ready in 10-30 minutes and it’s very hard to get wrong. So that also makes it perfect for those that are just starting out with their baking.
Without further ado then, here are twelve of the very best cornbread recipes ever.
1 Simple Cornbread
This simple cornbread recipe seems as good a place to start as any. To make this one, you will need 375g of plain flour, 225g of cornmeal, 1tsp of salt, 4tsp of baking powder, 110g of sugar, 480ml milk, 2 free-range eggs, and 110g of butter. You can also use a small tin of sweetcorn if you want to make it even healthier and more satisfying. Why wouldn’t you?
Start by preheating the oven to 200C. Then combine all the ingredients except the sweetcorn together in a large bowl. Mix until the consistency is similar to that of a spongey cake batter, then add in the sweetcorn.
Stir thoroughly to combine it all, and then pour it into a prepared baking pan. Bake for 20 minutes at the top of the oven. It will be ready when it is gold in color and springy to the touch.
