4. Try Roma Tomatoes
We recommend you use fresh tomatoes over canned in your recipe. Many food manufacturers add preservatives and other additives to their products to improve shelf-life, and some food producers may also add extra sodium to their canned tomatoes as well.
Overeating sodium can be detrimental to your health. Guidelines suggest we should consume no more than 2,300-milligrams of sodium per day, and one cup of canned tomatoes can contain over 300-milligrams of sodium alone. Eating fresh vegetables is a far healthier option for you and your family. One sizeable fresh tomato holds less than 9-milligrams of sodium – far less than the commercial canned varieties.
We love using Roma tomatoes in our recipes. These fruits hail from the lands of Italy, where they grow in the nutrient-dense volcanic soil found in the valleys of mountain ranges. The Roma tomato has a richer, more aromatic flavor profile, and blends well when adding it to your gazpacho recipe.
