Shepherd’s pie is a casserole that is traditionally made using ground lamb and is cooked with carrots and peas. However, many people will make the dish using ground beef instead. This is because ground beef is much cheaper than ground lamb, which makes it more of a budget-friendly dinner for the family.
The meat either lamb or beef is mixed with vegetables and then topped with mashed potatoes. One great thing about this traditional dish is that it can be made in advance, making dinner prep much easier. The recipes for shepherd’s pie can vary greatly but are typically made using minced meat that is cooked with peas, onions, corn, celery, and carrots, in a gravy.
