Coleslaw, also known as coleslaw, is a type of salad that is made primarily from finely shredded cabbage. Unlike many other salads, this salad actually includes the dressing as part of the recipe, meaning that it is far more flavorsome than other plain salads, and meaning that it can often be used as a kind of side dish, or as a topping in itself.

Coleslaw actually comes from the Dutch term koolsla, which means cabbage salad. It can be found in a book dating back to 1770, titled The Sensible Cook: Dutch Foodways in the Old and New World. This recipe includes butter, vinegar, and oil.

Today, the recipe will most often include mayonnaise. This
modern form of coleslaw has not been around for as long, which is a given
considering that mayonnaise in itself is a relatively new invention.

There are not many rules as to what constitutes coleslaw
however, with many different varieties and variations existing. In fact, there
is reportedly only a single ingredient that is consistent across all the
coleslaw recipes – and that is cabbage.

In this post, you’re going to see just how varied and
versatile this salad is – we’ll be looking at fourteen different recipes,
including not only recipes for making the salad, but also some of the various
different things you can do with it.

1. Super Simple Slaw

This super simple coleslaw recipe is a great one to have in
your wheelhouse and is a good one to start with as it will give us a great idea
of what coleslaw is and how you go about making it. This recipe will take just
5 minutes to make, and you can then use it as the basis for a whole host of
different variations.

This recipe will require just 8 cups of shredded cabbage,
one cup of shredded red cabbage, and four julienned carrots. These should be
extremely thin strips and should be light and flaky eaten on a fork.

Now add just a little bit of oil and a little bit of vinegar and you have the most basic version of coleslaw. And to be real, this would be more than interesting and tasty enough to be a great side along with any other meal. But of course, we want to get a bit more ambitious than that.

""

2. Added Flavor and
Zest

To make this, you are going to need half a cup of
mayonnaise, two tablespoons of white sugar, one and a half tablespoons of lemon
juice, one tablespoon of white vinegar, a teaspoon tablespoon of salt, and half
a teaspoon of pepper.

What you’re going to do in this case then, is to mix
together the mayonnaise, the sugar, the lemon juice, the white wine vinegar,
and the seasoning in a large bowl. Makes sure that they’re properly combined,
and then whisk them together in order to ensure that they’re nice and creamy
rather than lumpy.

Now you’re going to add this on top of the super simple slaw
we already saw, so that it nicely coats those thin strips of veg.

Finally, place this into the fridge and let it sit for about
2 hours to go nice and cool.

While the original mixture is the basis for pretty much any coleslaw you will make going forward, this combination is what we generally think of as coleslaw and is almost just as easy – an incredibly convenient option for making a host of different meals that bit tastier.

3. Custom Mayo Slaw

If you felt that you were cheating in that last recipe by
using mayonnaise, then never fear: you can make your own mayo if you prefer and
that way have a much more authentic alternative that you will use instead.

To make this piece of the puzzle, you are going to take egg
yolks, vinegar, and mustard, and then mix them together for ten seconds. Slowly
draw the blender up to incorporate all of the oil, and then repeat this process
several times. You’ll be left with a delicious, creamy, thick mayo that you can
then use in a variety of ways. This is fantastic on fries, but it also of
course is a crucial ingredient in any coleslaw.

In fact, if you make the super simple slaw and then just add on some mayo, then this will create a very tasty salad that works incredibly well.

4. Super Healthy
Coleslaw

Coleslaw is a very healthy recipe, to begin with, but there are ways we can up the healthiness significantly.

One of the first useful things you can do for instance is to
add more vegetables, and that’s precisely what we’re going to do in this
version. Start with the shredded cabbage, red cabbage, and carrot. Now add
equally thin amounts of raw onion, celery, swede, radish, cucumber, and
lettuce. You can add more besides, but this combo will pack in more than enough
nutrients while being very refreshing.

You want to keep the dressing for this one very minimal, we recommend using just a little bit of vinegar, oil, and lemon juice in order to make it.

5. Coleslaw With Egg

Another interesting variation on coleslaw is to use a little bit of egg rather than the usual mayonnaise. In fact, you can use this combination to make a kind of egg benedict type combination, which is very close to the flavor of coleslaw to begin with, though a little bit sweeter.

You’re going to make this one by taking your basic coleslaw recipe, and then cracking an egg over the top, mixed with a little bit of oil and some vinegar. The result is a tangy, sweet, and filling combination that is much more interesting than your average coleslaw. The only issue is that this combination won’t keep quiet so well as other variations, so if you want to serve it the best way is to crack the egg just before dishing up.

Egg also has a ton of health benefits. Not only is this a complete protein, meaning you get all of the amino acids that the body needs, but it is also a great source of choline, of healthy saturated fats, and more. Don’t worry about serving raw – the risk of salmonella from eggs is now vanishingly low.

""

6. Coleslaw With
Hollandaise

Another option is to try combining coleslaw with hollandaise
sauce as the dressing.

To make the hollandaise, you are going to take two fresh egg yolks and a little bit of white wine vinegar. Then you’re going to place them into a heatproof bowl and place on a saucepan of simmering water in order to heat. Don’t let the bowl touch the water however, as this will make it too hot.

Add 100g of melted butter into the egg yolks and then slowly beat together. This will thicken the mixture. Now take it off the heat and season with a little salt and pepper. This version tastes similar to the last but is a little more practical and is even more tangy and creamy.

7. Coleslaw With
Bacon Bits

Coleslaw can be a fairly basic salad that goes on the side
of another meal, or that you place on the table during a buffet. But while this
is true, it can also be a much more
interesting and satisfying dish in its own right. And that means that you can
actually use it in order to replace another meal.

One easy way to make a more filling and interesting coleslaw are simply to add bacon. In fact, adding bacon to just about anything will do that trick!

So take your coleslaw and then add in some bacon lardons (unsmoked preferably) and add the dressing we looked at in the second point. The result is the same old coleslaw, only now with delicious chunks of meat in it that make it that much more crunchy and rich. It tastes fantastic on potato, or in a burger.

8. Potato Salad
Coleslaw

Potato salad and coleslaw often go together as two options at a buffet, but they can also be mixed in order to make something even more interesting and delicious. And if you add bacon to that as well? Then this is an even tastier mixture and once again something that can be enjoyed as a whole meal.

To make this one, take some Yukon gold potatoes, wash and peel them thoroughly, and then boil them until they’re soft. Apply some salt and pepper, and then add them to a bowl with some mayonnaise, some mustard, some lemon juice, some garlic, and some vinegar. You’ll then mix this together, before adding it to your shredded cabbage, carrot, and onion.

9. KFC Coleslaw

Yes, this is the coleslaw that they dish up at KFC! And it’s every bit as good as the original. This one is made from 8 cups of dried cabbage, one carrot, two tablespoons of grated onions, a third of a cup of sugar, half a teaspoon of salt, a tiny pinch of white pepper, a quarter cup of milk, half a cup of mayonnaise, a quarter cup of buttermilk, and three tablespoons of lemon juice.

This makes for an absolutely delicious, creamy coleslaw – and of course, it tastes just great when you put it on the plate next to a side of chicken!

""

10. Celery

We’ve looked at a few different variations on the same theme here, but now it is time to make another slight alteration – just to ensure that you have plenty of option.

This one is a particularly rich, flavorsome, and spiced
option. You’re going to make it using three quarters of a teaspoon of minced
parsley, one and a half teaspoons of fresh lemon juice, a quarter of a teaspoon
of minced onion, one eighth of a teaspoon of celery seeds, one eighth of a
teaspoon of white pepper, half a cup of mayo, three quarters of a teaspoon of
white wine vinegar, a pinch of salt, two tablespoons of sugar, half a head of
cabbage, and half a large carrot.

You know what to do – shred it all, mix, and apply the dressing.

""

11. Cheesy Slaw

One way to make pretty much any coleslaw recipe all the more
delicious and exciting is to add cheese. This goes particularly well with the
bacon version, seeing as cheese and bacon are a match made in heaven.

To make this one, you will just need to take some cheddar cheese shavings, and then sprinkle them on top of the coleslaw before serving. Better yet though, why not melt some cheddar into the mixture with the egg and mayo. You can also do this with a host of other cheeses. Experiment a little!

""

12. Potato

We’ve looked at a bunch of different coleslaw recipes and
frankly, you probably have coleslaw coming out of your ears at this point!

With that in mind then, let’s take a look as well at how you
can go about using that coleslaw.

The first and best use for coleslaw then is to add it on top
of a baked jacket potato. Simply take your potato, half it, and then scatter
the coleslaw inside. You can also sprinkle some cheddar cheese on top if you
wish.

This is a healthy and easy meal that you can make any time, and that is also very warming on a winter’s evening! And actually, any potato works. Adding coleslaw on top of chips is another surprisingly excellent option!

""

13. Hot Dogs

Another great way to enjoy coleslaw is to use it in a hot dog. Just place it on top where you might normally use some ketchup and that way you can treat your coleslaw just like a sauce. This lets you kid yourself into thinking your meal just got a little bit healthier, and it actually goes really well with the sausage and the bread.

Coleslaw is perfect for a barbeque for this reason, and is also ideally suited to being used on burger buns, or on the side with chicken and chips.

""

14. Going Solo

Did you know that you can actually enjoy coleslaw on its own
as a meal though? This is a filling and satisfying dish that you can take as a
packed lunch, or even eat in the evening – especially if you follow one of the
bulkier recipes listed here.

There are a lot of good reasons to enjoy coleslaw in this way. Not only is it a good use of ingredients, but it is also a very healthy dinner option. That’s because coleslaw has a very low glycemic index. This means that it takes a long time for the sugar to be extract from the food and absorbed into the blood.

This in turn makes it quite different from sugary snacks, or unhealthy treats – which are known to ‘spike’ the blood sugar by quickly releasing a surge of sugar and causing a spike in insulin in response. This insulin spike will then cause the sugar to be immediately absorbed into the body, where it will cause a surge in energy, followed by an immediate dip when the body realizes it has used up all of that available glucose.

Because the energy is released slowly here, this means it can be more sustaining and keep you well-fueled throughout the day. It also means that you can eat it if you are at risk of diabetes – and it’s great for the slow carb diet.
