Ketchup can make almost anything tastier. Whether you have it on chips, on your meat, on a hot dog, on a burger… anything!

Kids love ketchup too, and actually the good news is that giving kids ketchup is a great way to provide them with antioxidants (anti-cancer molecules found in tomatoes), vitamins, and more. But that’s only true if you make the ketchup yourself.

The problem with ‘real’ ketchup you see – the shop-bought stuff – is that it contains very little actual tomato and a whole lot of e-numbers and additives that you really don’t want. This is why we’re going to look at how you can make your own ketchup very easily.

And not only will this be much healthier for you and your kids, but it will also provide you with the perfect complement to whatever you are cooking. Why? Because you can choose precisely what you want to go into it of course! That way you can make any ketchup you like, for any occasion.

1 Onion and Tomato Ketchup

This first ketchup recipe will begin with an onion. You are going to cook that in oil on medium heat, until it is soft, sweet, and just lightly brown. From here, you’re going to dunk in a heap of garlic and some fresh ginger, red pepper flakes, and allspice. Remember: ketchup doesn’t have to be ketchup! It’s called ‘tomato’ ketchup because it needs to remind you that there are different types out there!

As you can see, this recipe is already a lot more interesting than your average shop-bought product! You’re getting a bunch of different flavors, and a bunch of different healthy fruits and veg in order to pack in the nutrients.

Next, it goes the tomato paste. You’re then going to add just a little bit of brown sugar – not so as to put this out of the ‘healthy category’ and then you’re going to simmer it on low heat. Once that is done, you will simply blend the entire thing in order to make a thick paste. That thick paste not only tastes tangy and delicious, but it also provides any meal with additional nutrition!

2 Simple Tomato Ketchup

That last ketchup recipe was a little bit surprising, in that it contained a whole lot of ingredients other than tomato and then just a little bit of tomato paste at the end to redden it up.

So if you’re looking for something a lot more authentic to the original that you’re probably used to, then just take half a tin of chopped tomatoes, a whole tube of tomato puree, and a little bit of brown sugar. Mix all that up in a blender, heat it up, and voila you have a tomato ketchup that is going to taste almost like the stuff you buy in the shop, but with none of those unwanted preservatives.

This is a great basis you can use when creating all manner of ketchup by the way – you can then add new elements as you see fit, experiment, and see what works best for you.

3 Just a Tin of Tomatoes

While you might not really think of it as ketchup, simply adding a tin of chopped tomatoes can do the precise same thing. Just by some tinned tomatoes from the store, then place them into a blender and blend them up. In fact, you could even serve them as they are!

Add sugar if you like, but there’s no reason not to serve the tomatoes just like this. This will still work great on top of a sausage roll or similar, but the difference is that it now adds a fresh juicy-ness instead of being something that makes the food seem more synthetic and less healthy. It’s great if the rest of the meal consists of greasy and oily meats and fries!

4 Fresh Salad Ketchup

Many times we make ketchup and we think of it as being a sauce that you add to fried meats and unhealthy hot food.

But actually, you can add different types of ketchup to all kinds of things – including a fresh, cold salad. In particular, this will work well if you use fresh, cold ingredients.

Take some cherry tomatoes, chop them into halves, and then add them into a bowl with some chopped red pepper, some salt, and some courgettes. Blend this mixture together and you’ll have something that is fresh, tangy, and extremely healthy to add to any of your meals.

Adding fresh tomatoes to any meal will instantly make it healthier. As mentioned, this is an excellent source of antioxidants. Antioxidants meanwhile are compounds that work in the body to neutralize the effects of free radicals – those being molecules that cause damage to the cells on impact. Free radicals can eventually cause enough damage to add up to external, visible signs of aging. Worse though, they can sometimes break all the way into the nucleus of the cell where they can cause genetic defects.

5 Spiced Ketchup

This ketchup recipe involves more spices and more delicious herbs as compared with others on the list. For this one, you will need onions, celery, olive oil, garlic cloves, coriander, a stick of cinnamon, allspice, celery salt, ground black pepper, ripe tomatoes, Tabasco sauce, white wine vinegar, and golden caster sugar.

These ingredients combined can add up to a delicious and extremely tangy ketchup. The interesting thing about this kind of cooking, is that you are effectively making your meal more modular. Ketchup like this pretty much takes all of the spices and seasoning that you would normally add during the cooking process and puts it into a sauce to be added optionally. You can then decide if you want to add more flavor, or leave it off.

6 Carrot Ketchup

We’ve discussed a little already that you can make ketchup without necessarily needing tomatoes. This is just the type of ketchup that has become most famous – but there are plenty of others if you want to venture out.

Carrot ketchup uses carrots as the main ingredient, but is similarly healthy (carrots contain lutein and plenty other important nutrients) and has the same excellent tangy taste.

For this one, you are going to take your carrots and then you’re going to add carrots, olive oil, some tomato puree, a little swede, some sugar, some cinnamon, and some salt and pepper. Blend that together and you’ll have ketchup that goes much better on foods that you wouldn’t feel happy placing more tomato-based ketchup onto.

7 Spicy Ketchup

If you’re looking to spice things up then why not try… spicing it up? Adding a little bit of chili powder to any of these ketchup recipes is an excellent way to make your food that much more interesting.

The good news is that challis goes very well with ketchup and tomatoes, and in fact, tomatoes are used liberally in many chili dishes – including chili concave! This provides the spice and it is perfect for making a meal more interesting.

To make it, just take your chopped tomatoes and heat up with a little bit of sugar, salt, pepper, tomato puree, and chili to taste. Sugar and chili are also a surprisingly effective combination and one that more people should try.

""

8 Vinegary Ketchup

The secret to good ketchup always, is to try and get the juicy flavor of the tomatoes, and then to get some kind of tang or spice to punch through. One great way to do this is by adding apple cider vinegar, which will help to garnish your chips and will go perfectly with salt.

To make this one, take some onion, some garlic, and some chopped tomatoes and then fry together in a pan until they’re caramelized and soft. Now add in some smoked paprika, ground cinnamon, and a good amount of vinegar to taste. Again, you are then going to take your mixture and put it in a blender once again in order to give it that soft and creamy consistency that we all know and love in our ketchup!

This one works really well on fries, and in fact, you should consider adding vinegar to many of the previous recipes we’ve seen, as it can help to make them that much more interesting.

""

9 Adult Ketchup

Adult ketchup might sound like some kind of euphemism, but rest assured that that’s not what we are talking about here!

Rather, we’re talking about ketchup that has been given a touch of alcohol to make it all the more interesting. You see, tomato goes really well with red wine, and if you cook it off, then most of the alcohol will evaporate ensuring that this isn’t unhealthy.

Most of the recipes we’ve seen already can be made richer and more interesting with a little red wine. And the good news is that this is an ingredient that does bring some nutritional benefit – in particular, it brings resveratrol which comes from the grapes and which has been shown to be very effective in improving mitochondrial efficiency. This means in layman’s terms, that your cells will get better at producing energy, and that they will therefore be able to provide your body with more fuel while producing fewer by-products.

""

10 Juicy Ketchup

Don’t just think about flavor when you create your ketchup – think as well about the texture and what the best consistency is going to be for your intended use.

If you’re adding just a little dollop of ketchup onto some fries or onto the side of a plate, then you might choose to use ketchup based on puree and chopped tomatoes – things that will thicken the recipe.

But if you want to make a ketchup that you can pour, then why not consider using shop-bought tomato juice? This is much runnier and can find its way into more crevices, making it the perfect way to add flavor to a plate of ingredients.

You can then add a little bit of tobacco, a pinch of salt, and some celery and blend it all together. And yes, this is effectively a bloody Mary. It goes extremely well with a fry up!

""

11 Chunky Ketchup

What if you want to go the other way and make yourself a thicker ketchup dip? In this case, you might choose to blend less and thereby leave some large chunks of onion, of garlic, and of tomato in the ketchup.

You can make a simple recipe by taking some chopped tomato, and then mixing that with chopped onion, some white wine vinegar, some basil, some garlic, and a little bit of red pepper. Cut this up nice and small and then cook on low heat with some sugar for a while. The result should be ketchup that is lump and that lets you taste the healthy bits. It adds more texture and interest top whatever you’re cooking and should generally be considered a great choice for anyone who is interested in improving their health while still getting the great ketchup taste.

""

12 Chili Ketchup

We’ve already discussed the spicy ketchup above, but what is different this time is that you’re making ketchup that is pretty much a chili concave without the rice and the mincemeat!

So that means you’ll be taking some chopped tomatoes, some puree, some chili powder, some kidney beans, some onion, and finally some sweetcorn. Mix this all up inside a blender after cooking it down to become a soft and creamy combination and then consider adding a little bit of sugar if you want to make it sweeter and less savory.

This is a filling and very satisfying ketchup that we find works particularly well on burgers and hot dogs. Effectively you are turning your hot dog into a chili dog but without the mess!

""

13 Garlic Ketchup

Garlic ketchup is a ketchup that mixes chopped tomatoes from a tin in with crushed garlic. You can even do this with garlic paste and a tomato puree. The end result will be a delicious paste that has a much more savory appeal than many of the others and many of the health benefits associated with garlic. In case you don’t know what those are, they include vasodilation (widening of the blood vessels to increase blood flow), antibacterial properties, improved digestion and more.

Use a lot more garlic as compared with your tomato in this recipe and add in some more onion as well. Make the mixture primarily out of those two ingredients and then use just a little bit of tomato puree mixed in to provide the tomato flavor.

14 Thick Ketchup Dip

Finally, consider making this thick ketchup dip the next time that you want to offer sharing food. The idea is to go with a basic ketchup recipe, but then to add a small amount of flour or some thickening granules. By doing this, you’ll be able to make the mixture thicker and that in turn means that it will stick better onto a chip or anything else you dip into it. It also makes the ketchup seem psychologically more filling and more interesting.

Try this recipe: take some chopped tomatoes, some syrup, lots of purees, some grated carrot, and some vinegar. Cook on a high heat. Now blend together but add thickening granules as you go in order to thicken the mixture out and to make it as dense as you can without losing the ketchup consistency.
