4. Self Raising Flour
Self-raising flour is going to serve as the basis for your bake and is what will provide the ‘rise’. This, along with the sugar, provides the chemical reaction that will let the substance expand and grow – while the egg and milk hold it all together and the fat cooks.
Self-raising flour is very simple to use and you just need to sift it carefully in with the egg, sugar, and oil before adding the milk in at the end.
While self-raising flour is a very useful tool for making a lot of delicious bakes, it also contains gluten. Some people can’t eat gluten for a number of reasons that are well-publicized. If that describes you then, you need to look for alternatives.
One great alternative is coconut flour. This is a healthy alternative that offers a little nutrition, and that will also provide half the job of the self-raising flour. You will now need to use some baking powder as well though.
While self-raising flour keeps things simple, if you choose to go with coconut flour, then you need to keep in mind that it won’t rise as much and that it will expand significantly in size when you add the moisture – so you need less of it.
